  Mouth and body connections

   Making the connection:

Researchers are providing more evidence each day of an important connection between your overall health and oral health. Here are just some of the ways in which periodontal disease, or gum disease, may affect other conditions you have or those that  may develop.

With heart disease and stroke, the facts are compelling. People with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary disease as those with disease-free gums. One study found that 85% of heart patients studied had periodontal disease. The most likely explanation is that somehow plaque and oral bacteria that find their way into the blood stream and contribute to the thickening of the walls of the coronary arties.

Diabetes and gum disease affect each other equally. Diabetics are more likely to have gum disease than most people. Gum disease itself makes it more difficult for the diabetic to control blood-sugar levels.

The fact of the matter is, periodontal health is a top priority for your overall continuing health.

    Oral Cancer-

  Dental advancement in early detection.

Oral cancer, is one of the most common forms of cancer. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there are 40,000 new cases of oral cancer reported in the United States. Men are more likely to get oral cancer than women.

Oral cancer can be caused by tobacco products, alcohol, certain foods and excessive exposure to the sun. Risk factors could also be genetically inherited.

Dr. Hart recommends scheduling your routine dental exam twice a year to ensure your dental health. Our office offers the latest in oral cancer screening with the Velscope.

The velscope is a non-invasive, hand held light that emits a cone of light into your mouth. The velscope allows the doctor to see change in the patient's mouth, even before changes can be visibly seen or felt.

The current recommendation is that the velscope be used at least once a year. While this proceedure is recognized and recommended by the American Cancer Society and the American Dental Association, most insurance companies will not cover this procedure.

Our office offers this service for a minimal fee of $36.00, payable at the time of service. Your health is always our greatest concern, and we will always bring you the best and latest advances that benefit your health.

 Have a great day!
